We can't afford to draw again-Smalling

smalieChris Smalling insists Manchester United cannot afford to keep drawing matches if they want to have a lead in the title race.

David Moyes’ side are undefeated in the Premier League since their loss at home to West Brom on September 28 but four wins and three draws since have left the champions nine points behind leaders Arsenal.

On Wednesday evening,United host Everton at Old Trafford before welcoming Newcastle United on Saturday and Smalling has encourages his side to secure six points from the two matches.

“We have two games at home and we have to make sure we don’t drop any more points,” Smalling is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“In the last two games we have dropped four points so it’s not great. But we have two home games and it is now imperative we take six points from those. We have to.

“We are starting play in good spells in games but we need to finish teams off.

“We don’t want to see Arsenal get too far ahead, but we can only focus on ourselves and we need to start picking up maximum points. It’s good to be unbeaten but we can’t afford too many more draws.”

Smalling also hailed the form of Wayne Rooney, whose scored a double to secure a 2-2 draw for United against Tottenham on Sunday.

“Wayne is our talisman out there, he’s running the show at the moment,” said Smalling.

“Whether it’s assists or goals, he’s at the heart of it all. He’s really doing well at the minute.

“Ever since I’ve been at the club he’s always been running and creating stuff. Maybe people are picking up on it a bit more now, but he has been doing it throughout his career.”
