Thomas Vermaelen weighs up Arsenal future

Thomas Vermaelen has said for the first time that he would consider leaving  Arsenal in January to improve his chances of playing in the World Cup  finals.

The central defender has lost his place in Arsène Wenger’s team and is  expected to make only his second start of the season when Belgium host Wales  in their final group A qualifying match tonight.

Vermaelen will return as captain of his country, having been left on the  substitutes’ bench when they qualified for the finals with victory in  Croatia on Friday. Even without the injured Vincent Kompany, Belgium  preferred Nicolas Lombaerts at the central defence positon.
