NPFL WEEK 36 WRAP – Pillars drop points, Akwa United wins Away from Home.


[dropcap]T[/dropcap]en games went down on Saturday across various match centres in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Matchday 36 produced 14 goals, eight home wins, one away victory and a draw. Victor Namo scored his 17th goal of the season as he helped Nasarawa United garnered all three points, Kano Pillars maintained their top position on the log despite a defeat in Gombe in a northern derby that ended 2-1, Shooting Stars’ relegation was confirmed when they suffered a 1-0 defeat in Yenegoa against Nembe City and Akwa United needed three points to brighten their survival chances in the NPFL and they muscled it out against Warri Wolves.


Warri Wolves 0-1 Akwa United

Akwa United goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode and Emmanuel Enize’s heroic performance earned the Promise Keepers the much needed points in Warri on Saturday. Kayode’s top notch display in the game was very impressive, he stopped a penalty in the added minute after regulation time to ensure that his team recorded the only away win on Matchday 36. Akwa United now have 47 points from 36 games and are currently placed 17th on the log, a win in their next home against Kaduna United will definitely shoot them out of the basement.

Gombe United 2-1 Kano Pillars

The Patanmi Stadium witnessed the last northern derby of the season on Saturday in Gombe. The Savannah Scorpions took the lead through Babangida Ibrahim ten minutes before half time, Sani Mohammed got the second in the 74th minute before Gambo Mohammed consoled the Sai Masu Gida faithfuls with a late strike. Pillars remain atop of the NPFL table, eight points above Gombe United who is currently 7th with 52 points.

Rangers 2-0 Sharks

Two first half goals in Enugu on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium rattled resurgent Sharks Fc as Meshack Chukwubuikem put the host ahead  in the first half before Marshall Odah sealed the victory for the Flying Antelopes four minutes before halftime. Enugu Rangers are now 5th on the 20-team log with 55 points while Sharks Fc has dropped to the 8th position.

Nasarawa United 1-0 Sunshine Stars

It took a 29th minute spot kick for the Solid Miners to defeat Sunshine Stars of Akure on Saturday at the Lafia Township Stadium. League top scorer Victor Namo scored his 17th goal of the season and handed his side the decisive home victory. Nasarawa holds the 14th spot on the table with 49 points.

Enyimba 1-0 ABS

Former ABS star, Andrew Abalogu made the difference in Aba on Saturday when he scored the only goal of the day against his former club in the 66th minute. By the virtue of the victory, Enyimba are now second on the league standings with 59 points a point behind league Champions Kano Pillars.

Nembe City 1-0 3SC

Rotimi Omaniwa goal in the 37th minute left handed the Oluyole Warriors the relegation ticket in Yenegoa when Nembe City recorded a 1-0 win against the visitors on Saturday. 3SC, the first Nigerian club to win an international trophy, now have 43 points from 36 matches to stay put at the bottom of the table, while Nembe City are 16th on the league table with 49 points.

Kaduna United 1-0 Bayelsa United

It was a difficult game for the Crocodiles at the Kaduna Township Stadium on Saturday, Kaduna got the only goal which separated them via a spot kick which was well converted by Monday Panemeras 21 minutes into the keenly contested game. Kaduna United remain unbeaten at home, they are 10th on the table with 50 points from 36 league matches.

Kwara United 1-1 Wikki Tourists

Ibrahim Shuaibu shot the Tourists ahead in the 14th minute of play in Ilorin on Saturday but Kabiru Sanusi cancelled the deficit ten minutes after Ibrahim got the first goal to save his team from a home defeat, game ended in a one all draw. The Afonja Warriors slipped to the 13th positon with 49 points.

Heartland 1-0 El-Kanemi Warriors

Embattled Naze Millionaires slowed down ELKANEMI’s continental ambitions on Saturday in Owerri with a slim victory. Bright Ejike 57th minute penalty kick was all the Owerri-based team needed to get three points. The Borno Warriors dropped to 4th on the standings with 57 points.

Dolphins 1-0 Lobi Stars

Emem Eduok’s 60th minute strike on Saturday at the Liberation City Stadium stopped Lobi Stars from picking a valuable away point. The Benue Army moved down to 15th position, just a point behind Dolphins who are currently placed 9th with 50 points.
