Brendan Rodgers claimed there is no agreement in place for Luis Suarez to depart from Liverpool if they were unabel to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Suarez, 26, wanted to leave Anfield in the previous transfer window amid interest from Arsenal, but at the end decided to remain at the club.

The forward has been in superb form since returning from his 10-match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, scoring 13 Premier League goals so far.

His performance have helped Liverpool into fourth in the table, and Rodgers is is hopeful that Suarez now sees his future with the Reds.

“There never was that agreement before and there never was that this summer,” Rodgers said in the Times. “The contract was what it was. We want him to stay and with his contract running for two-and-a-half years, I am sure there will be something between now and the end of the season to keep him here.

“There will be a number of dependencies on that, but the most important thing is that the player is happy. I didn’t sit in on the conversations, but as I understand it there is no agreement of any kind.”

Asked if he will remain at Liverpool until the season ends, following talk of renewed interest from Arsenal in January, Suarez said: “Yes, I am happy here and I will stay.

“The most important focus for me is to help Liverpool to get into the top four after being out of the Champions’ League for a long time, and I believe I will help the team to get it.”
