Halftimeng La Liga Team of Week 20 (2018)

Barcelona tightens its grip on the summit of the La Liga pummeling
mid- table team Betis after Atletico could on manage a draw at the
Wanda Metropolitan against impressive newbies – Girona. Real Madrid
managed to get a ‘rare’ win at home having smashed seven past
Deportivo La Coruna, who themselves have conceded the second highest
number of goals in the Spanish top flight – 44. While the table
toppers in that aspect, Relegation battlers Las Palmas shook punters
and footie aficionados after they beat third placed Valencia 2 – 1,

Here is our La Liga team of the week

GoalKeeper

Sergio Rico (Sevilla)

That surprising loss to Alaves a fortnight ago has done a whole lot of
good to Sevilla. They have capitalized on that impressive 2 – 1 away
win at Atletico in the Spanish Cup with a fine 3 – 0 win at Espanyol.
Scoreline may have suggested comfort but Sergio Rico was
instrumental to making remarkable saves to keep his team in the game
pushing Sevilla to victory.

Gabriel Mercado (Sevilla)

30 year old Argentinian was pivotal to Sevilla’s decent defensive solidity
this term, he is one of the very few defenders who still possess the
primary attributes of a proper defender – brute, doggedness and
determination. Bar injuries, i think he has done enough to get on the plane
to Russia with Jorge Sampaoli

Thomas Vermaelen (Barcelona)

I liken him to players like Carles Puyol, Belgian is that type of
footballer who goes on a forced break via injuries but comes back and
slots in seamlessly like he never left. Had a keen eye on him since the
El Classico and he has been amazing just like at the Villamarin.

Marcelo (Real Madrid)

Left Back has been disastrous for the larger part of the season it has
to be said but what a performance against the Turcos. Not a big deal
he got two assist because he has tremendous ability going forward ,
some even tag him a ‘pseudo-winger’ but his defensive display on
Sunday was in equal measure with his offensive display.

Jonas Ramalho (Girona)

He is probably not the quickest even at his age but his ability to read the game to make timely tackles and
interceptions is absolutely fantastic. Reports say Julen Lopetegui is
looking to invite him to the La Roja squad in time to keep him off the
grasp of Angola. Ramalho was part of the Spanish under-19 squads which
won the European Championship in 2011 and 2012.

Jonathan Viera (Las Palmas)

Never thought I would experience a time where the club from the tiny
island will struggle but it is happening – managing only 4 wins out of
20 games – but against Valencia, Las Palmas showed flashes of what
had become a regular feature in the La Liga and Jonathan Viera was in
the thick of it all making Kondogbia and co look ordinary and sneaking
in a goal himself

Ivan Rakitic (Barcelona)

Croatian has received a lot of stick this season not because he has
been bad but because he hasn’t been in the same level that made
Barcelona cough out millions to get get him Sevilla, the former
Schalke man seem to be getting on his strides getting a goal and an
assist. Valverde will be excited his midfield maestro is slowly
progressing into form ahead of the UCL showdown in less than 2 weeks
from now.

Casemiro (Real Madrid)

When the defensive midfielder is in great shape like against Depor,
just be sure Real Madrid are going to destroy their opponents. He is
the one who soil his hands to make the attacking players flourish. He was excellent throughout the match as Los Blancos secured the points.

Manuel Trigueros (Villarreal)

Wonder why the Yellow Submarines have amassed 10 points out of a
possible 12, The 26 year old has single handedly galvanised his team with
his work rate and eye for key passes. Although they are  one point off the Champions League
spot behind Real Madrid, Javi Calleja will want to keep the Spanish
midfielder fit to give Los Blancos a run for their money

Luis Suarez (Barcelona)

Uruguayan has had a difficult start to the season by his standards but
he duly picked up form towards the end of 2017 and he has picked up
from where he stopped last year – banging in the goals, now on 15
goals just 4 shy of ‘god’ -Lionel Messi . His brace versus Betis took
his La Liga goals to 100 in just 114 appearances – phenomenal
especially when you realise it took Messi 154 apps to achieve same
feat.

Gareth Bale (Real Madrid)

Personally chuffed to bits for him, looks to be gradually getting the
niggling injuries off his back . When Bale is fit and in the mood, not
many left footers are as good as him – well, Lionel Messi ( I Know).
Getting a brace over the weekend will fill him with much needed
confidence, La Liga might be done and dusted but i believe Zidane will
go in hard than ever before to win the Copa Del Rey and Champions
League and he needs his soldier fully fit for this.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

If you need to know how the Argentinean wizard fared this weekend, he
got a brace, a assist and turned a whole bunch of professional
footballers from Betis into a bunch of funsters who had no idea of
how to deal with him. Enough said.
