Roberto Martinez has backed his Everton defender Sylvain Distin following reports that the Frenchman had been in an altercation with fans at Selhurst Park earlier this month.
Everton had eked out their second-consecutive goalless draw against Crystal Palace on 9th November, and the travelling fans were seemingly not happy at that.
Television images from after the game showed Distin going up to a fan and having, what appeared to be, a heated conversation.
However Distin later claimed it was “a simple chat” and not a fight as the press were making it out to be, with Martinez today fully behind his player.
“I spoke to him”, Martinez told a press conference. “It was a natural reaction. We were as disappointed as the fans.
“It was just a natural football conversation. We were frustrated for the right reasons – we wanted to win.”
The draw had come after a similar scoreline against Tottenham Hotspur, and Martinez is all for looking at the bigger picture, given the Toffees sit sixth in the table.
“It proved to be a very important point when you look at the other results that weekend”, he added.
“It was just a natural reaction [from Distin] to dropping two points but it proved to be a point gained.”
